Program Description
The Contemporary's Studio Program supports the
practicing, professional artist by providing studio
space at reasonable rates. With multiple studios
available, this program fosters a collaborative
environment supportive of the creative process.
Emerging, mid-career, and established artists
are invited to apply for studios; selection is
made by a panel of current Contemporary board
members, studio artists, staff and representatives
from the Atlanta community.
Artist studios are open for public viewing two
times per year at special events. The Contemporary's
commitment is to provide low cost studios, and
the artist in return provides timely payment of
rent, three hours per month per year of community
service and two open studios per year. A collaborative
environment is encouraged through proximity of
the studio artists, the Contemporary's Gallery
and its education programs.
The Contemporary neither undertakes nor implies
any formal obligation to exhibit or publish studio
artist’s work, as the studio program does
not take the position of representation of individual
artists.
We look for artists who: have a high degree of
technical ability; display obvious talent; demonstrate
a commitment to their career through an existing
body of work and have nurtured a personal, artistic
vision.
Artists are expected to work in their studios
on a consistent and ongoing basis. Non-use of
studio space is cause for eviction. The demand
for these spaces justifies this requirement. The
program was set up to accommodate artists whose
primary interest is the expressive use of their
medium rather than a strictly commercial application.
The studios are to be used as workspaces, not
as living spaces, salesrooms or administrative
offices. The studio program fulfills a basic need,
which is outlined in the NEA recommendations concerning
individual artists:
”The basic overriding need for individual
artists is time to concentrate for extended periods
on the development of their work. Since many artists
rely on other employment for their economic livelihood,
uninterrupted time for intensive aesthetic investigation
is hard to come by.”
This program represents an acknowledgement by
The Contemporary of the artists’ professional
status in the community, and their need for space
where they can concentrate on the development
of their work.
The Atlanta Contemporary Art Center is proud
of its 12 artist studios at 535 Means Street.
Studios range in size from 225 to 755 square feet
and are entered from a large, secured courtyard.
Each studio is equipped with a sink and a telephone
hook-up. Each studio is unique and may include
a wide range of amenities such as, high ceilings,
dramatic city views, balcony access and built-in
loft storage.
Commitment
Studio awards at the Contemporary come with a
firm financial commitment on the part of the studio
artist. Artists are expected to pay rent each
month when it is due. Artists in arrears on their
monthly rent will be sent a formal warning by
registered & certified mail and, if their
respective rent is not brought up-do-date as demanded
in the warning notice, will be evicted per guidelines
stated in the original lease agreement. Rents
are well below market rate for such finished space
in the downtown Atlanta area and are based on
the square footage of the studio. Heating and
air conditioning are included with the monthly
rental fee with individually regulated thermostats.
Studio vacancies are filled with new artists
selected by a panel made up of Contemporary board
members, staff members, studio artist representatives
and representatives from the arts community. The
selection panel meets as needed to fill studio
vacancies. Applications are encouraged from all
qualified artists regardless of race, age, gender
or cultural background. Quality of work is the
primary directive and artists are selected accordingly.
Tenure for the studios is three (3) years, with
an option of two additional years possible based
upon the recommendation of the currently seated
Studio Panel. Artists are required to sign leases
and provide a security deposit and first month's
rent at the beginning of the lease agreement.
In addition, each artist must agree to 36 hours
of service per year to the Contemporary (averaging
3 hours per month annually), which can include
activities such as participation in education
events and programs organized by the Contemporary,
help with exhibition installation or deinstallation,
office support and support for events organized
and hosted by the Contemporary. Studio artists
are also required to participate in two open houses
a year in which their studios are open to public
visitation.
Artists wishing to extend their lease agreement
from three (3) to five (5) years must submit a
formal request for consideration to the Studio
Panel. Criteria for consideration includes, but
is not limited to, timely and consistent payment
of rent with no past-due rent in existence, creation
of new bodies of work during the initial three
years of the studio lease, up-to-date fulfillment
of service requirements to the Contemporary and
participation in public events as required. The
Contemporary reserves the right to increase rents
for the additional two (2) year period.
